Kennedy Street Tenants Group

The Acomi Resource Centre in collaboration with Manitoba Housing promotes the wellness, community and self-development in some of the public housing units on Kennedy Street. The Tenants Advisory Committee holds meetings once a month to enable the Resource Centre to stay on top of issues and programming needs of the community and works with the Tenants Service Coordinator and Community Development. The Housing units under this Tenant Advisory Group are numbers 355, 357, 388, 400, and 421 on Kennedy Street.
  • Some activities held at the Centre are:
      • Nutritious Food Bingo: Held every two weeks. Tenants win a fruit basket or supper basket
      • Movie nights: Once a month for all tenants and their children.
      • After School Program: The Centre provides snacks, computer programs, facilitates art and crafts activities,the use of a smart board and different kinds of games for the children in the neighborhood.
      • Snack Program: The Centre works in collaboration with Winnipeg Harvest to offer snacks for programming and for clients.
      • Mother’s Day activity: held in May and is facilitated by two of the tenants.
      • Beach Field Trip: Tenants usually have a swimming and/or picnic day at Bird’s Hill Beach in July.  The trips have been a great success and the Tenants usually have lots of fun.
      • Sporting Games: The Centre receives tickets, donated by United Way and Tenants and their families do get opportunities to attend professional sporting games played in the city.
      • Zoo Trip: Tenants usually take a field trip to the Assiniboine Park Zoo during the summer months. Such trips are very exciting and educative including exploring new exhibits at the zoo.
      • BBQ Day: The BBQ day is held in September for tenants, their families and friends.
      • Halloween Party: Tenants together with Volunteer Staff organize a Halloween Night Dance in October. Winners of best costume usually win prizes.
      • Investors Group Christmas Day of caring held in December for community members. Tenant have the chance to attend on their own with their children. All children received gifts.
      • Christmas dinner: ACOMI/Manitoba Housing Tenants Advisory Group holds an annual Christmas dinner in December.

Kids Drop-In

The Acomi Center has Kids Drop-In program for ages 6-12 years. The program runs from 3:30pm to 6:30pm. Volunteers are on hand to help with snacks, computer programs, art and crafts activities, the use of a smart board and different kinds of games for the children in the Central Park

Computer Access

The Acomi Resource Center offers computers for use by the public, tenants on Kennedy Street and the general African community. Services are available from Mondays to Fridays when there are no scheduled programs and/or meetings taking place at the Resource Center. There are many drop-ins who use our public computers

Community Wheels

The ACOMI community wheels program resolves some of the transportation needs in running program within the community by providing access to a community van for the transportation of program participants to/from program activities. The program has these goals:  (a) Short-Term - Families, students and community members have appropriate, accessible, convenient
