Advancing Community Unity and prosperity

Welcome to the official website of the African Communities of Manitoba Inc. (ACOMI). Established as a non-profit, non-sectarian organization, ACOMI is dedicated to fostering a vibrant, engaged, and sustainable African Canadian presence across Manitoba. Our mission is rooted in the promotion of a culturally rich and economically prosperous, socially inclusive society, where the diverse voices and contributions of individuals of African heritage are celebrated and valued.

Our Vision

At ACOMI, we envision a Manitoba where members of the African community thrive, empowered by their cultural heritage and united in their pursuit of common goals. We strive for a future where unity, friendship, brotherhood, and sisterhood flourish among people of African descent in Manitoba, fostering a sense of belonging and collective strength.

Our Commitment

Our commitment is deeply ingrained in the principles of unity, understanding, and service to our community. We aim to promote mutual understanding between individuals of African heritage and Canadians of diverse backgrounds, fostering a spirit of inclusivity and cooperation.

ACOMI is dedicated to ensuring that all members of the African community have access to essential goods and services necessary to address issues such as poverty, homelessness, education, health, nutrition, and social exclusion, delivered in a culturally appropriate manner.

Our Mission

Preserving Cultural Heritage

Central to our mission is the preservation of our common cultural heritage, while also acknowledging and respecting the unique identities within our community. We recognize the richness and diversity of our backgrounds, including the various languages spoken by our membership, and we celebrate these differences as sources of strength and resilience.

It all started in 1997 with the Africa Pavilion celebrating it’s 17th. anniversary this year! A few years ago, the Africa Pavilion consisted of 4 countries, in 2015 we have performances from a lot more African countries; we take you on a Cultural Safari from East to West, North to South of Africa and a taste of some of the marvellous performances through the years – the reason behind what has made the Africa Pavilion a must see during the Folklorama season. “Come on a Safari to Africa!”…for the Africa Pavilion we’ll make sure we take you to “All of Africa!”

The Attraction

Go on safari and experience the beauty of Africa as we showcase the different cultures of countries from around the African continent. There is something for everyone to enjoy with our local entertainers showcasing the traditional royal performances, folk dances with traditional instruments, and the display of the African Spirit dance.

Come taste our signature dishes: fried plantain with jollof rice, spiced shish kebobs, safari style samosas, curry chicken, Tusker beer from kenya or African Punch (our house specialty) and African hibiscus tea.

Don’t miss the historical artifacts and hancrafted materials at our cultural display and our ever growing African Market where you can buy a souvenir to take home…all are welcome!
