Advancing Community Unity and prosperity

Welcome to the official website of the African Communities of Manitoba Inc. (ACOMI). Established as a non-profit, non-sectarian organization, ACOMI is dedicated to fostering a vibrant, engaged, and sustainable African Canadian presence across Manitoba. Our mission is rooted in the promotion of a culturally rich and economically prosperous, socially inclusive society, where the diverse voices and contributions of individuals of African heritage are celebrated and valued.

Our Vision

At ACOMI, we envision a Manitoba where members of the African community thrive, empowered by their cultural heritage and united in their pursuit of common goals. We strive for a future where unity, friendship, brotherhood, and sisterhood flourish among people of African descent in Manitoba, fostering a sense of belonging and collective strength.

Our Commitment

Our commitment is deeply ingrained in the principles of unity, understanding, and service to our community. We aim to promote mutual understanding between individuals of African heritage and Canadians of diverse backgrounds, fostering a spirit of inclusivity and cooperation.

ACOMI is dedicated to ensuring that all members of the African community have access to essential goods and services necessary to address issues such as poverty, homelessness, education, health, nutrition, and social exclusion, delivered in a culturally appropriate manner.

Our Mission

Preserving Cultural Heritage

Central to our mission is the preservation of our common cultural heritage, while also acknowledging and respecting the unique identities within our community. We recognize the richness and diversity of our backgrounds, including the various languages spoken by our membership, and we celebrate these differences as sources of strength and resilience.

The ACOMI Visible Minority Newcomer Women (I-Belong ) project aims to develop labor market ready skill sets and employment preparation of newcomer women. The project is designed to help visible minority women apply their acquired labor market knowledge to match employers’ needs to successfully enter the labor force, secure employment and remain competitive as part of the local labor force. Our labor force targeted employment preparation group activities are developed from both self-driven and labor market expectations. The project provides visible minority women with appropriate knowledge of Canadian work place settings. We believe visible minority women can make a positive contribution in their lives and the province of Manitoba labor force. The project is focused on building every individual’s employ-ability capacity to excel the Manitoba labor market, provide a supportive safe space, support the development of individualized specific employment or career goals, and matching of accurate knowledge to navigate local labor market demands. The “I-Belong” project works from a strength based approach by helping visible minority women build confidence, provide necessary Canadian work force preparation, and to build capacity to positively impact their lives as well as the next generation of visible minority Canadian women.

The program is for permanent resident visible minority women
